  • NSS

    +

The National Student Survey (NSS) is a national initiative, conducted annually since 2005. The survey runs across all publicly funded Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and participating HEIs in Scotland. Additionally, since 2008, Further Education Colleges (FECs) with directly funded higher education students in England have been eligible to participate.

The survey asks final year undergraduates and students in their final year of a course leading to undergraduate credits or qualifications to provide feedback on their courses in a nationally recognised format. All students studying on courses leading to undergraduate credits or qualifications (such as Bachelors Degrees, Foundation Degrees, Higher Education Certificates and Diplomas) will be surveyed in their final year of study. This includes all final year higher education students at colleges in England.

    In addition:

-Students on more flexible part-time programmes (whose final year cannot be easily predicted) will be surveyed during their fourth year of study.

-Students who have withdrawn from study during their final year will be included in the survey as their feedback is equally valuable.

-Students repeating their penultimate year will be surveyed (NOT when they eventually progress to their final year).

-Students who were already surveyed in 2009 will not be surveyed in 2010.

The survey has been commissioned by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) on behalf of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW), the Department for Employment and Learning, Northern Ireland (DEL), the Training and Development Agency and Skills for Health. These bodies have a statutory role in ensuring the quality of teaching in higher education is assessed, and believe that students’ views should form an important part of the assessment.

The survey is fully supported by the National Union of Students (NUS), NUS-Wales, and NUS-USI.

Ipsos MORI, an independent research agency, administers the survey. All work undertaken by Ipsos MORI is carried out in accordance with the Data Protection Act and the Market Research Society Code of Conduct.

Eligible students will be able to complete the survey online between early/mid January and May. Eligible students will receive an e-mail inviting them to complete the survey online. Ipsos MORI will follow up non-respondents to the online survey by post and then telephone in order. They collect the views of as many students as possible to ensure the survey results are robust. Students are able to opt-out of the survey if they wish to do so.

There are 23 questions, relating to the following aspects of the student learning experience:

    - Teaching on My Course

    - Assessment and Feedback

    - Academic Support

    - Organisation and Management

    - Learning Resources

    - Personal Development

    - Overall Satisfaction

The results are made available to prospective students and their advisors on Unistats.com to help them make informed choices of what and where to study. The results are also made available, to participating universities, colleges and students’ unions to use to facilitate best practice and to enhance the student learning experience.

Unistats is a website which brings together authoritative, official information in one place, in a way that is not available on any other website to help potential students and their advisers compare subjects at universities and colleges in the UK. The information is provided by HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency), the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and the National Student Survey (run by HEFCE - Higher Education Funding Council for England ). It includes information on the following.

    HEFCE:

    - National Student Survey - feedback from final year undergraduates on the quality of their courses

HESA - for higher education (HE) at Higher Education Institutions and indirectly funded HE students at Further Education Colleges

Student data - entry qualifications and UCAS points, continuation and achievement.

Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) data - destinations of leavers, job categories and job types.

Context statistics - student domicile, age, level of study, gender, study mode.

LSC - for directly funded HE students in Further Education Colleges in England

Student data - entry qualifications and achievements.

Context Statistics - student domicile, age, level of study, gender, study mode

At LJMU NSS results are analysed by Planning and Information, data is made available on Web Hub and reports are considered by Academic Board each Autumn.

Support is available to programme teams analysing data at programme level and in taking forward action plans from members of the Academic Enhancement Unit

  • Postgraduate Research Experience Survey

    +

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) is a survey made available by the Higher Education Academy (HEA). It was designed to help institutions enhance the quality of postgraduate research degree provision by collecting feedback from current research students in a systematic and user-friendly way.

LJMU students registered on postgraduate research programmes are included in the survey

The PRES is managed centrally by the HEA but run by each institution involved.

In 2009 the survey was run in March-May. The survey will next run in 2011.

Students involved in the survey will receive an email with a link to an online questionnaire for them to complete.

The questionnaire contains a standard set of questions and some free text boxes. Participating institutions are also able to add their own specific questions.

Each institution involved in the PRES is able to download their own results. Aggregate results for all participating institutions are also available to allow benchmarking.

At LJMU a report of the results is compiled by the Research and Graduate School. This report is then seen by the Research Degrees Committee and the Academic Board.

For more information about the PRES please visit the PRES pages on the HEA website.

For more information about the PRES at LJMU, please see this web page or contact Sue Spiers.

  • Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey

    +

The Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) was developed following the success of the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES), and builds on an initial one-off postgraduate taught survey commissioned by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) in 2006. The purpose of the survey is to gain feedback from students studying on taught master programmes in the UK on their experience of their courses. Results will help institutions to revise and improve their taught master programmes and inform the choices of future applicants to HE and to contribute to public accountability. The survey was piloted in 2008, run in 2009 and will run annually from 2010.

LJMU students registered on a taught postgraduate programme will be included in the survey.

The PTES is managed centrally by the HEA but run by each insititution involved.

The survey runs March till May.

Students involved receive an email with a link to an online questionnaire.

The questionnaire contains a standard set of questions and some free text boxes. Participating institutions are also able to add their own specific questions.

Each institution involved is able to download their own results. Aggregate results from all institutions involved are also made available to enable benchmarking.

Academic Enhancement Unit (Quality Support) work with the survey and results. A report is received by each Faculty Academic Standards and Enhancement Panel and then Academic Standards and Enhancement Committee and Academic Board.

For further information about the PTES please have a look on the HEA web pages about the PTES.

For further information about the PTES at LJMU, please contact Carol Swaisland.

  • Summer Semester Programme Survey

    +

The Summer Semester Programme Survey enables students to express their opinions about their programme and about the University. The aim of the survey is to improve the student learning experience. All students registered on the Summer Semester Programme are included. These are students from TAR College, Institut Megatech, TMC Educational Group, Accra Polytechnic, Ho Polytechnic, HELP University College and the International College of Business and Technology (ICBT).

The survey is conducted by external company, Mott Macdonald MIS, aided by the Academic Enhancement Unit (Quality Support).

The survey runs annually in August, towards the end of the Summer Semester.

Academic Enhancement Unit (Quality Support) liaises with Marketing & International and relevant programme leaders. Student information is provided by Planning & Information (LJMU email address, ID number, programme registration information, gender, age band). Students receive an email with a link to their questionnaires. Students can also access their questionnaires via Blackboard by typing in their ID numbers.

The questionnaire is similar to that used for the LJMU Student Survey.

Results for all programmes combined and for individual programmes are generated.

A summary report is provided for the Collaborative Academic Standards & Enhancement Panel (CASEP) members.

Results are considered at CASEP and action agreed. It is also expected that results be considered at boards of study, school management teams, and also inform the annual monitoring process.

For further information about the Summer Semester Programme Survey please contact Carol Swaisland.
