Collaborative Programmes

Foundation Degree in Building Services Engineering

LJMU School of the Built Environment is offering a foundation degree in Building Services Engineering in partnership with two North West FE colleges, one at Liverpool Community College, the other at Stockport College.  These programmes offer professional progression routes for Building Services technicians and trades people in the Greater Merseyside, Greater Manchester and surrounding region, to attain status as professional design engineers, consultants and managers on building services contracts.

The Foundation Degree, which meets the requirements of trainees aspiring to further studies at degree level and professional membership of the CIBSE, offers electrical and mechanical services engineering specialisms as well as a commercial route for those specialising in contract and project management.  The FD runs as a three year part-time day release programme in both institutions, though with a two year block release option at Liverpool.  The flexibility of the programme means that students can join in year one with craft or National Certificate qualifications or join in year 3 with an HNC or HND.

Upon successful completion of the FD students are able to progress to level 3 of the BSc (Hons) Building Services Engineering programme, which runs over two years on a part-time day release basis at LJMU's Byrom Street campus.  This programme is fully accredited by the CIBSE and affords successful graduates with the educational requirement necessary for Associate membership of the institution and IEng registration.

In partnership with Liverpool community Collag.

The overall aim of the programme is to develop knowledge, understanding and intellectual skills appropriate to a variety of roles within the building engineering services sector. The programme will address both building services engineering design and commercial project management practices and as such it is suited to those engaged in the industry in either of these capacities. It is also well suited to people in other sectors of the built environment who are required to interface with the building services engineering sector i.e. facilities management, etc. The programme provides a stimulating and challenging study that accurately reflects the activities of the building services engineering industry to enable students to pursue an effective, productive and responsible career in the sector. There are three different pathways through the programme to reflect the specialist role of the individual; Mechanical Building Services, Electrical Building Services or Commercial Management.

 In partnership with Stockport Collage.

This course is aimed at those who have completed their Higher National Certificate in Building Services Engineering and wish to further their studies. Students who have achieved a minimum of a 10 units NQF HNC in Building Services Engineering will have the required entry qualifications. Alternative qualifications will be considered for non standard entry, however this may extend the duration of the qualification.

Foundation Dgree in  Construction and Surveying

This project is developing a Foundation Degree in Construction and Surveying aimed specifically at employees of construction and property organisations. The project will seek to extend the opportunities for progression onto Higher Education by offering the Foundation Degree as a collaborative programme to local FE organisations. Currently Wirral Metropolitan College and Warrington Collegiate are seeking validation approval to offer the programme in the next academic year.   Accredited prior experiential learning will be encouraged as the main method of entry onto the programme therefore developing opportunities for employees without formalised academic qualifications to progress onto HE programmes. Advanced entry from existing HNC Construction qualifications will also be encouraged.

In Partnership with Wirral Metropolitan College.

The Foundation Degree is a modern, vocational higher education qualification which combines valuable work experience with the academic structure of a degree programme. The course has been developed in consultation with construction industry employers and is suitable if you are currently an employee in the industry. The course is flexible and accessible to those with the ability and motivation to succeed. As well as being a qualification which could increase your career opportunities and earning potential, it can also provide a route onto full honours degree courses. As a joint collaboration between the University and the College, you will have the flexibility of studying a Liverpool John Moores University Foundation Degree at Wirral Metropolitan College.
