Entry Requirements for Applicants from the EU
The Faculty of Education, Community and Leisure welcomes applications from students all over the world. There are currently students from over 100 nations studying in Liverpool.
Whilst we are not able to list all the qualifications we accept on these web pages, this page lists general entrance requirement for applicants from the European Union (EU) to the Faculty of Education, Community and Leisure. These pages are for guidance only and list only minimum entrance requirements. These requirements may be subject to alteration at any point in the application year.
The grades listed below are the minimum entry requirements for admission into the Faculty of Education, Community and Leisure non-teacher training degree programmes. The ratio of applications to places varies across subject areas and will influence the offers we make. It is likely that in the following subject areas, these requirements may be higher than those stated below:
- Sport Development with Physical Education
- All suitable applicants are subject to interview
- Coaching Development
- All suitable applicants are subject to interview
- Dance Studies
- All suitable applicants are subject to audition
- Events Management
- Tourism and Leisure Management
The final decision to offer a place on these programmes is taken with reference to the whole UCAS application, and, where applicable, interview/audition. This includes academic grades, personal statement and academic reference. If you have work experience in relevant areas, we will also take this into account and may be able to accept lower academic qualifications in some cases.
For guidance on subject-specific criteria for certain degree programmes, please refer to the ‘course entry requirements at a glance’ section of this website. GCSE (C) in English language (or international equivalent) are the minimum requirements for all our degree programmes.

English Language Requirements

English Language Proficiency
All applicants will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English language. For non-native speakers we will require at least one of the following:
- Minimum overall IELTS score of 6.0 for entrance onto foundation and degree programmes.
- TOEFL (paper based test): 580
- TOEFL (computer test): 237
- TOEFL (Internet Based Test): 88 or above with minimum 21 in Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing components.
- GCSE/IGCSE minimum grade C
- Cambridge ESOL Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) – Pass at Grade A
- Cambridge ESOL Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) – Pass at C or above
- British Institutes' English Diploma level C1
- Michigan English Test / ECPE / MTELP / MELICET: 80% pass required
(all tests must usually have been taken within 18 months prior to admission)
Please note that at least one of the above grades must be held by all applicants wishing to proceed onto a degree or a foundation course at the Faculty of Education, Community and Leisure.
EU Countries in Alphabetical Order:
Austria
Minimum requirement: Reifeprufung/Reifezeugnis/Matura overall Grade 2, with Grade 2 in any required subjects. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language. These are minimum entry requirements.
Belgium
Minimum requirement: Certificate d'Enseignement Secondaire Superieur or Diploma Secundair Onderwijs at grade 7 out of 10 or above with minimum 7 out of 10 in specified subjects. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language. These are minimum entry requirements.
Bulgaria
Bulgarian Diploma of Completed Secondary Education with overall average of grade 4, including 4 in Maths and English and a relevant science. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language. These are minimum entry requirements.
Cyprus
Greek-Cypriot System minimum requirement: The Apolytirion (minimum average of 18) may need to be supplemented with additional qualifications the equivalent of two GCE A levels in relevant subjects or a suitable Foundation Programme. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Turkish-Cypriot System minimum requirement: The Devlet Lise Diplomasi may need to be supplemented with additional qualifications such as two GCE A levels or a suitable Foundation Programme. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language. These are minimum entry requirements.
Czech Republic
Minimum requirement: Pass in the Maturitni Zkouška / Maturita (school-leaving certificate) with an overall average of 3, and a minimum grade of 3 in all subjects. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Denmark
Minimum requirement: Studentereksamen at grade 9 overall or Short Cycle Higher Education Diploma (or equivalent). In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Estonia
Minimum requirement: Passes in 4 graduation examinations of which 2 should be state examinations (Riigieksamitunnistus) at grade 4 or above. Please note that the gümnaasiumi lõputunnistus is only valid with Riigieksamitunnistus (state examination certificate). In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
European Baccalaureate
Minimum requirement: Overall score of 70%, with 7.0 in three written subjects. These are minimum entry requirements. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Finland
Minimum requirement: Ylioppilastutkinto/Studentexamen: passes in relevant subjects at grade 8 or above. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
France
Minimum requirement: Baccalauréat/Baccalauréat Avec Option Internationale: Overall score 14. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English.
Germany
Minimum requirement: Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife / Abitur: Overall score 2.0, including 10 or better in three named subjects. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Greece
Minimum requirement: Apolyitirion of Lykeio : Overall grade 17, with at least a score of 18 in English. A-levels or International Baccalaureate or a recognised foundation course in the UK/Greece may be expected for some programs. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Hungary
Minimum requirement: Erettsegi / Matura grade 4. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
International Baccalaureate
We require students to obtain the award of the Diploma. The minimum requirement is an overall score of 28 points, however this will vary depending on your programme of study. We may also ask applicants for specific scores in specific areas that are pertinent to their degree choice.
Italy
Minimum requirement: Maturita – overall Distinto (Distinction), a score of at least 65/100 is expected. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language. These are minimum entry requirements.
Latvia
As well as having achieved a good standard of secondary education. Students will usually be required to undertake further study such as International A Levels, International Baccalaureate or complete a university foundation programme. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Lithuania
Minimum requirement: Secondary School Diploma / Maturity Certificate (Brandos Atestats) at 12th grade with grade 7/10 overall (minimum 66%). In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Luxembourg
Minimum requirement: Diplome de fin d'etudes secondaires with overall mark of 40 with 40 or above in the three main subjects. In high demand areas three subjects with marks of 50 is the minimum requirement. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Malta
Advanced Matriculation grade C or above is a minimum requirement. A Diploma from the University of Malta, with good passes in relevant subjects will usually be expected. These are the minimum requirements.
Netherlands
Minimum requirement: Diploma Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs (VWO) at overall grade 7 including 8 in English. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
OIB (International Option Baccalaureate)
Minimum requirement: Baccalaureate a option international: grade 14/20 overall with three subjects at 12/20. These are minimum entry requirements.
Poland
Minimum requirement: Swiadectwo Dojrzałości / Matura with 70% in each of the three compulsory standard/elementary and extended/advanced subjects [both oral and written]. These are minimum entry requirements. Where specific subjects are required for entry to a degree programme these must be included in the final Matura and a mark of 70% will be required. Please refer to ‘course entry requirements at a glance’ section of this website to see subject requirements for each degree programme. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Portugal
Minimum requirement: Certificado de fim de Estudos Secundários (previously Certidáo do Décimo Segundo Ano) with an overall mark of 16 (bom/good). In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Republic of Ireland
Minimum requirement: Irish Leaving Certificate (Higher Level): Equivalent of between 220-300 UCAS points depending on the programme of study.
Romania
Diploma de Bacalaureat with minimum of 7 in individual subjects. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Scotland
Applicants from Scotland studying Scottish Highers should have a minimum of 220 UCAS points. These are the minimum requirements.
Slovakia
Minimum requirement: Maturita Skuske with very good (2) or excellent (1) passes in all subjects (minimum four). In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Slovenia
Minimum requirement: Matura grade 4 overall score. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Spain
Minimum requirement: Curso de orientacion universitaria (COU) / Bachillerato Unificado y Polivalente (BUP) at grade 6.5 / Notable or Spanish Selectividad at grade 6.5. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
Sweden
Minimum requirement: Swedish Fullstandigt Slutbeytg fran Gymnasieskolan overall average VG (Very Good) with VG in required subjects. In addition all applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language. These are minimum entry requirements.
Wales
Minimum requirement: Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma. Minimum equivalent of 220 UCAS points, some programmes may require an equivalent of 300 UCAS points.
