Dr Close was awarded his PhD from JMU in 1999. For 6 years he was a post doc at University of Liverpool working on BBSRC and Research into Ageing (RiA) grants. He is Principal Investigator on £200,000 RiA and aprox £100,000 in Industrial money as PI. He has been involved with approximately 15 research papers, 4 invited reviews and 2 book chapters specialising in antioxidants and muscle function.
He is currently supervising PhD and MD students and continued collaborative links with Liverpool and Aintree Hospital.
His research has focussed on delaying or preventing muscle frailty. At Liverpool University the majority of his work was in transgenic animal models and he would now like to translate this into human studies building on the strong national and international collaborations he has developed over the last 6 years.
