Institute for Health Research Annual Conference 2011

Call for Abstracts

LJMU’s Institute for Health Research (IHR) is now inviting submissions of abstracts for poster (and selected oral) presentations at its annual conference on Tuesday 21 June 2011 at LJMU’s Art and Design Academy, Mount Pleasant, Liverpool.

The competition this year is open to LJMU Staff and Postgraduate Research Students.  Eligible students are those registered on MRes, MPhil, PhD and Professional Doctorate programmes at LJMU, or who affiliated to the University through their supervisory team.  Individuals who have/will have very recently completed their research degree programme at LJMU (between February and May 2011) are also eligible to enter.  A selected number of poster authors will be invited to deliver a short (3 minute) oral summary of their research.

All posters exhibited will be included in the competition.  A cash prize will be awarded to the winner of the poster competition in each category (staff and student); for staff and students delivering an oral presentation of their research in addition to exhibiting a poster, a cash prize will be awarded to the winner and runner-up in each category. The judging criteria include novelty, significance and the rigour of the research presented.

Posters reflecting collaborative research i.e. projects developed in conjunction with colleagues from organisations/groups external to the University, such as health services/NHS, pharmaceutical industry, and/or posters deemed to reflect research with considerable impact potential (e.g. in relation to behaviour change, or new product development, or diagnostics) will be considered for a further two prizes.  It is possible for a single poster to win more than one prize.

Abstracts should clearly demonstrate the health and health-related significance of the research, and be aligned to: medical sciences and therapeutics; public health and the organisation and delivery of services; quality of life including living with disability or illness.

Abstract Submission

Text-based abstracts (not exceeding 300 words) and using the abstract template must outline the rationale for the research, the methods used, and detail the major findings, conclusions and potential impact of the research.  Posters/abstracts that have previously been accepted for presentation within the last 12 months may be submitted/re-produce.  No more than two abstracts per person may be submitted. You can download the abstract template here.

Please complete the abstract template and send your submission(s) by email as a MS Word attachment to Paula Brennan (IHR@ljmu.ac.uk) by 26 April 2011.  Following consideration by a review panel, successful applicants will be notified by 17 May 2011.  Entrants will be required to produce a full colour poster.  Queries about posters or other aspects of the conference can also be addressed to Paula by email (as above).
