Medicines for Children
Excellent research links exist with the Royal Liverpool Children’s Hospital (RLCH): Professor Tony Nunn (RLCH) has recently been appointed as Industrial Professor of Pharmacy. A number of staff work in collaboration with the Cheshire Merseyside and North Wales Medicines for Children Local Research Network (MRCN). Professor Jim Ford sits on the advisory boards of both this Network, and the MCRN Formulations operational group.
Research is concentrated in two main areas – development and evaluation of novel formulations and information about medicines

- A range of projects are aimed at improving the delivery of drugs for childhood asthma, including improving inhaler design using computational fluid dynamics, formulating nanosuspension pressurised metered dose inhalers and inhalers containing monodispersed particles. Novel controlled release dosage forms are being examined for delivery to paediatric patients with GlaxoSmithKline. Other work focuses on the development of an electronic data logger coupled with Game Technology for assisting asthma treatment in children and formulation of long-acting rhDNase for the treatment of cystic fibrosis.
- Studies are ongoing in ascertaining the information needs of parents and carers in general paediatrics and specifically in asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, dermatology, cardiology and renal disease. Work on meeting the needs of children with diabetes for information assesses information provision available from health care professionals, while qualitative work is examining the sources of advice and information that children diagnosed with asthma use to influence how they manage their condition. The methodology being developed for this project will in future be applied to other childhood medical conditions.
