The Liverpool School of Art and Design (LSAD) is situated in the Art and Design Academy (ADA), a modern purpose-built building in the heart of Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter.
LSAD is the oldest school of art and design in England outside London, dating back to 1825, when it started life as the Liverpool Mechanics’ School of Art Institute with the purpose of providing education to working men. By the 1850s a School of Art was evolving and in 1856 a new name recognised this development – The Liverpool Institute and School of Art. In the 1880s a new building on Hope Street, adjacent to the principle building on Mount Street, was opened to house the School of Art.
By 2000 the school had developed a much broader range of subjects and students, and was straining to meet its ambitions within the many buildings that it had acquired through time.
In 2008 the school relocated to its current home in the Art and Design Academy, a RIBA award-winning building designed by Rick Mather. This enabled us to bring all our disciplines together and exploit the practical and creative opportunities arising from the meeting of creative subjects.
Our studios now provide beautifully designed and uplifting spaces in which to work enjoy a fantastic environment that also offers inspirational views over the city.
The building also houses a gallery and several other public spaces that serve as a platform for the activities of the school and a hub for other national and international cultural and creative activities. As a student here you will enjoy daily interaction with activities such as conferences, exhibitions and symposia related to creative industries from around the world.
ADA workshops combine state of the art digital design and fabrication technology, together with equipment that will enable you to experiment with using more traditional methods of production and construction.
Our programmes are geared towards combining teaching and work-related learning with practical knowledge, enabling students to succeed in their chosen careers beyond graduation.
Teaching is individually tailored and oriented around each student, with the week divided between lectures, seminars, tutorials, studio supervisions and workshops.
Research in the LSAD is first-class, and organised thematically to bring together disciplines and exploit their methods to address issues of significance and concern to the broader culture of the city and beyond. Our internationally excellent research informs our curriculum and underpins our teaching, and all our staff, including Readers and Professors, are involved in the day-to-day delivery of undergraduate as well as post-graduate and research programmes. |
