The Redmonds Building was buzzing with excitement on a wet and windy autumn evening, as the first LJMU Avid Film Awards were presented to talented students. The awards night held in association with Liverpool Screen School and sponsored by Avid, a supplier of editing software to the television and digital media industries, celebrated the achievement of students’ films which were completed in the first year of four degrees - Media Professional Studies, Film Studies, Film Studies and Creative Writing, Liverpool Screen School and Broadcast Media Production degree from the School of Engineering. Second year students from across the four courses attended along with this year’s freshers as invited guests to support their course mates and watch the screenings. The awards were hosted by Dr Corin Willis, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies and organiser of the event, and Paula Baines, Screen School Student Experience Officer. The awards were handed out by Rachel Daly from Avid UK. Winners of the awards Best People on the Move Film Won by Broadcast Media Production students Phillip Davies Best Location Film Won by Broadcast Media Production students Best Profile Film Won by Film Studies students Best Factual Film Won by Media Professional Studies students Best Story Won by Film Studies and Creative Writing students Most Original Won by Film Studies Students After the event, Rachel Daley, Sales Executive at Avid said: “It was a pleasure to attend the LJMU Avid Film Awards this week and witness so many creative and enthusiastic students embrace the opportunity to showcase some wonderful pieces of work. “There is a clear desire at Liverpool Screen School to create an environment which is underpinned by fantastic lecturers and technology facilities. The students that I spoke to advised there is real sense that LJMU is committed to providing an education that enables students to reach their full potential." Dr Corin Willis, senior lecturer at Liverpool Screen School said: “My aim in organising the LJMU Avid Film Awards was to start the second year of the University's filmmaking degrees with an enjoyable student experience that offers recognition for success achieved so far and motivation for even greater success in future years. “It was fantastic to host one of the first events using the wonderful facilities in the new Redmonds Building and also to welcome staff and students from the Broadcast Media Production degree from the School of Engineering to make the awards a genuine cross school event. & “We are extremely grateful to Rachel Daly and AVID for their kind sponsorship of the event. Avid really did add to the excitement of the evening for students as the awards they received came with the stamp of industry approval.” Getting the Liverpool picture: how will local tv work for the region?
Following on from the success of ‘Getting the picture: making local tv happen’, the Liverpool Screen School’s national event focused on the issues and opportunities around the forthcoming issue of local tv licences across the country, Liverpool Screen School is pleased to be hosting a follow-up event, ‘Getting the Liverpool picture: how will local tv work for the region?’. The purpose of the afternoon is to allow and encourage each of the organisations who have bid for the Liverpool licence to discuss their scheduling philosophy and model, and how they envisage working with the wider community. Faculty Post Graduate ConferenceThe Faculty of Arts, Professional and Social Studies will be holding a Post Graduate Conference on 10th October 0900am-4pm.
