Helks [SD 695 745]

Continuing along the footpath following the river upstream for about 500m, we climb to Helks. To the east of the path there is a steep, tree-covered slope down to the river.
Here we are looking at the west bank of the river. These are the same rocks as those exposed on east bank of the river in panorama_2. Identify the bedding planes.

  • Are the rocks dipping upstream or downstream?
  • What is the angle of dip?

Hopefully you will have seen that the direction of dip changes as you move through the gorge.

  • What are the possible explanations for this?
  • In this case the rocks have been folded.
