Unconformity in the Bank
The photograph below shows the horizontally bedded limestones sitting on top of the vertically bedded sandstones. You should now be able to picture the unconformity extending across the area shown in the panorama.
The limestones would have extended from Thornton Force waterfall across the river. Today they underlie most of the grassy slopes above the footpath along the banks of the river.
