River Downstream of Thornton Force

The sandstones and slates first seen at Pecca Quarry are exposed again, but here they dip about 65º downstream (as opposed to the beds being vertical at the bottom of Pecca Falls and as seen in Pecca Quarry).

Originally laid as horizontal beds, the sandstones and slates were folded in Silurian times forming a structure geologists call a syncline. You cross the axis (the place where the dip of the Ordovician rocks changes) of this syncline near the tea hut at the top of the steps alongside Pecca Falls.
