Hotspot 4: Ingleborough

Ingleborough has a stepped topography which is due to the relative hardness of the almost horizontal bands of limestone, sandstones and shales from which is it made. Ice has eroded the less resistant rocks, leaving the more resistant ones protruding as steps. The feature in the foreground is a limestone pavement.

  • What do you notice about the shape of the top of this mountain?
  • What about the profile of it’s right flank compared to the left flank?
