July 2009 saw Silverstone Race circuit host the largest ever Formula Student event, with 105 universities from 23 countries competing in five categories. The event is aimed at engineering students to showcase their talents in race car engineering.

LJMU Racing Team competed in Class 2 events which involved formal presentations of the team's designs, business model and costing reports, along with a part built car. LJMU Racing Team and Formula Student judgesThe presentations were performed to a panel of F1 and automotive engineers acting as judges on behalf of IMECHE, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The LJMU Racing Team comprised of 10 students from the across all years of Mechanical, Electrical, Computing and Automotive Engineering programmes.

With stiff competition from other institutions, LJMU Racing Team gave a strong performance in the design presentation, impressing the judges with their commitment and knowledge of the LJMU car. The business and costing presentations also received positive feedback.

Durng the prizegiving ceremony, attended by around 2,000 students, Formula One Chief Engineers and other highly regarded automotive engineers presented LJMU Racing Team with the award for ‘First Overall Winner in Class 2’ and the IMECHE prize of ‘Class 2 Design Winners’. This was a fantastic achievement for the university but also for team as it has only recently been formed into its current configuration.

The team is now preparing for a Class 1 entry at Silverstone 2010 which requires a fully functional racing car with a full design, cost and business analysis.

Anyone who would like to be part of the team, contributing in areas such as business, accounting, media or any other discipline, should contact the team manager Jack Clisby on j.o.clisby@ljmu.ac.uk for more information.
