Black History Month
05 October 2009
Black History Month is a national annual celebration that takes place every October. Its aim is to foster an understanding of black heritage, history and contributions to British Society.
At LJMU we celebrate, promote and support the history and culture of diverse communities and will continue to ensure dignity and respect for everyone within our community.
During this month and for the rest of 2009, we are working on a number of local initiatives in order to continue to strengthen the links we have already established with the diverse communities in Liverpool.
For example, we have contributed to sponsoring Black History Month by opening the doors of our Art and Design Academy, providing it as a venue for some of the regions planned activities.
The Sankofa exhibitions will be taking place at the Academy from 28-30 October. Apart from having an LJMU exhibition stand at this event, we will also be exhibiting at the Positive about Education and Employment fair, which has been organised by the Diversity Group, dedicated to celebrating the life and achievement of James Klass, a former co-host of BBC Radio Merseyside black magazine programme Upfront.
To celebrate Black History Month, various activities have been planned locally and nationally. Below are links to some of these events and you can also download the Merseyside Black History Month calendar of events.
