Liverpool Design Symposium Programme

23 October 2009

Taking place on Wednesday 4 November at LJMU's Art and Design Academy, Liverpool Design Symposium 2009 presents the theme of Branding the City, with an impressive line up of speakers and events.

Headlining the symposium will be Michael Wolff of Michael Wolff & Company, recognised globally as a leader in thinking on brands and co-founder of Wolff Olins, one of the world’s most iconic design companies. Michael has been brought to the Design Symposium courtesy of D&AD as part of their renowned President’s Lecture series.

Another of the day’s key speakers is Andy Chambers, twice BAFTA winner and co-founder of Digit, one of the UK’s longest established digital design companies. Andy’s talk is entitled 'Debranding Our Cities – why brands must be in flux to be interesting.' Digit has most recently been working with a number of leading brands including MSN, Shell and Marks & Spencer.

D&AD will also be running a series of student focused sessions as part of their Education programme. The day will kick off with a talk on the D&AD Student Awards, with general advice for graduating students on how best to present themselves and their work in the current economic climate. Design and Digital Workshops as well as Portfolio Surgeries – one-on-one sessions with creative professionals – will follow, together with a Workshop specifically for university tutors.

The effectiveness of design will be a key topic throughout the day, with the Design Business Association (DBA) presenting a session by Ian Thompson, Creative Director at Thompson Brand Partners, who will be talking to students about designing effectively to get the best jobs. There will also be an exhibition on the DBA Design Effectiveness Awards, displaying this year’s 13 Gold winners.

In addition the DBA will be running a session on Effective Design in the Public Sector led by Peter Mills, Consulting Director at The Team and Deborah Dawton, CEO at the DBA, highlighting the Symposium’s appeal to design buyers and marketing professionals from the public sector.
