Students fundraise for Barnado's

LJMU Events Management students raised over £3500 for the charity Barnardo's.
As part of the 'Planning and Staging Events' module, 67 LJMU students currently enrolled in the second year of the BA(Hons) Events Management programme in ECL raised a total of £3536.71 for the UK charity Barnardo's.
In order to provide LJMU students with an opportunity to apply and develop their knowledge and skills and to get a taste of what it is like to be an event manager, the idea of including the staging of a live event in the second year module was introduced by the newly appointed Event Management lecturer Susanne Gellweiler and supported by her colleagues in the Centre for Tourism, Consumer and Food Studies.
The integration of Barnardo's as an official client set the students a task to raise money for and increasing awareness about the work of the charity. Working in groups, the students staged nine fund-raising events across Liverpool and North Wales between 16 and 27 November 2009. The themes of the events ranged from a fashion show, pub quizzes, a comedy and a virtual horse-race night to a local talent show, a ghost-tour, a street collection in Liverpool city centre and an open-mic night.
The staging of these live events proved to be a great opportunity for the students to develop their WoW skills and to take their knowledge and understanding of event management beyond their textbooks. Furthermore, students commented on how much they learnt about themselves and how the challenge of planning and successfully staging an event inspired their confidence.
Following this great success of the second-year event management students, this 'real-life' approach will become a permanent feature in the Events Management programme at LJMU.
