Fairtrade Fortnight

11 January 2010

Members of the LJMU and LSU Fairtrade Joint Steering Group are preparing a programme of events and activities for this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight which takes place from 22 February to 7 March.

The theme chosen by the Fairtrade Foundation for this year is The Big Swap. There’s a particular emphasis on encouraging a swap to Fairtrade tea and Liverpool has been selected as one of the 6 UK cities to be involved in the Strictly Fairtrade Tea Dance event on Saturday 27 February in cities across the UK.

The Liverpool Students’ Union and the University have worked together for a number of years to promote Fairtrade products and the Fairtrade message. The Fairtrade Foundation has again recognised our efforts and renewed our status as a Fairtrade university, being impressed in particular with the extent to which we have managed to incorporate Fairtrade in to the curriculum for a number of courses.  In the Renewal Report the Foundation commented: “Well done for incorporating Fairtrade in to the curriculum significantly, as well as research and journal articles at the University. This is a shining example we would love to replicate in other institutions.”

The Joint Steering Group holds its next meeting on 19 January.  Please contact Donna Gutteridge, email D.Gutteridge@ljmu.ac.uk, with any suggestions or news of events that we can include in our programme.
