Hillsborough Disaster seminar
13 January 2010
Title: Hillsborough: The Final Phase?
Speaker: Sheila Coleman, Hillsborough Justice Campaign
Date: Thursday 28 January, 3pm-4.30pm
Venue: Room 121, 68 Hope Street
96 died as a result of the Hillsborough Disaster in 1989; hundreds were physically injured; an inestimable number suffered trauma which remains to the present day. The systematic cover-up that followed the Disaster led to a denial of the true facts being formally established. Now, in the 21st year following the Disaster, Government is in the process of releasing files, access to which has previously been denied to families.
Will these files reveal the truth of the facts surrounding the disaster? Or is this an attempt to appease the campaign for justice and consign Hillsborough to history without truth and accountability ever being formally acknowledged?
Sheila Coleman will discuss these latest developments within the wider context of events around Hillsborough. She will highlight and critique the terms of reference of the panel soon to be established to oversee the release of files. Sheila will also discuss how, from a grass roots level, the establishment of the Hillsborough Justice Campaign enabled families and survivors to confidently regain ownership of their lived experience.
Sheila Coleman has been involved long-term in researching the causes and consequences of the Hillsborough Disaster. She is a member of the Hillsborough Justice Campaign. In respect of Hillsborough Sheila is co-author of Hillsborough and After: The Liverpool Experience and No Last Rights: The Denial of Justice and the Promotion of Myth in the Aftermath of the Hillsborough Disaster. She has published numerous articles in relation to Hillsborough.
This is an open Criminology Research Seminar and all are welcome to attend.
