School pupils learn life saving
12 February 2010
Pupils from St Mary’s College, Wirral, today visited LJMU’s Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences for an opportunity to experience student life and develop essential life saving skills.
The Aimhigher taster day enabled the 21 year nine pupils to work with academics and student advocates to gain practical experience of CPR, manual handling and the recovery position, which were reinforced with an interactive computer workshop and quiz. Pupils also had the opportunity to discuss HE courses, careers in healthcare and ask their advocates questions about student life.
Caroline Hilliard, one of the Aimhigher Account Managers, commented: “For the pupils, many of whom are considering a career in healthcare, this has been a valuable insight into Higher Education and helped break down myths and barriers to university.”
Pupil Jessica Chord said: “Today was good because I have learnt things I didn’t know and our student advocate was really nice.”
This activity is part of the ‘Next Step’ progression programme run by LJMU’s Aimhigher team which aims to raise the motivation and attainment of young people across Greater Merseyside and encourage them to aspire to Higher Education.
