Research Centre Secures €516,000 European Funding for LJMU.

A research team led by Dr Zaili Yang from the Liverpool Logistics, Offshore and Marine Research Centre (LOOM), based in School of Engineering, Technology and Maritime Operations, has been awarded a European grant of €516,000 to improve marine port operations in the European Union.

The project, entitled 'Intelligent Transportation for Dynamic Environment' or InTraDE, is a collaboration with six industrial and academic partners from France, Belgium, the UK and Ireland, and has total funding of €3.5 million. The Centre's share of grant will enable the project team, which includes Professor Jin Wang and Dr Steven Bonsall, to work on improving port design and operation using computer modelling. The work draws upon the Centre's established international expertise in maritime safety, port operations and logistics management.

Professor Jin Wang, Director of the Liverpool Logistics, Offshore and Marine Research Centre commented: "Over 40% of trade between European Union members is handled by waterborne transport so ports are key elements of the transportation system. Projects of this type not only improve the profitability of the port operators but also contribute towards the greater use of marine transport in inter-EU trade, which is highly efficient in terms of environmental performance and energy efficiency."
