Contribution to the Business Award
30 July 2012
Philip Jones, an LJMU BSc Product Innovation and Development student, is the Regional Winner of The Lloyds Register Educational Trust Contribution to the Business Awards and will be representing the North West region at the National Final in London in September.
This prestigious event is attended by representatives from Industry as well as Year in Industry Alumni, providing networking opportunities for the young engineers and the perfect setting in which to illustrate their value to the future of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) sector. The Year in Industry, an Engineering Development Trust (EDT) scheme celebrates 25 years of the annual competition.
Philip won the award for the linear LED lighting range he developed during his work placement year at ACDC Lighting Systems. He now has a place in the national final on 18 September 2012.
Philip commented, "My experiences during my first two years at LJMU prepared me for my year in industry, providing me with not only sufficient academic knowledge but the personal and presentation skills required to succeed in the engineering industry today. I feel that a year in industry is very important for an undergraduate to experience the world of work and truly immerse themselves into a company over a full year, I would whole-heartedly recommend to any student no matter what course they are completing to undertake a year in industry."
Year in Industry students often make a significant and positive difference to their placement companies and the awards are an opportunity for students to share their accomplishments with a panel of judges drawn from the industry as well as presenting their projects to all attendees at stands set up to highlight their contribution.
The national finals will be held on 18 September 2012 at the BT Auditorium in London with guest speakers Terry Scouler, CEO of EFF- The Manufacturers' Organisation and Stephanie McGovern, BBC News Business Presenter.
