World-leading magazine features LJMU

Research shows 1.5 million years ago our human ancestors walked as we do.

LJMU is featured in this week's Science magazine following research by Professor David Huddart and Professor Silvia Gonzalez which proves that our human ancestors Fossil footprints found in North Kenyawalked upright.

The two professors were part of a team which excavated and laser scanned fossil footprints found in North Kenya and discovered that, although the footprints were 1.5 million years old, they were relatively similar to comparatively modern, 5,000 year old footprints found on the Sefton Coast, North of Liverpool.

The findings reveal that 1.5 million years ago our ancestors had evolved an essentially modern human foot function and walked on two feet as we would today.

Science is one of the world's most respected journals of original scientific research, global news and commentary. Only 8% of papers submitted to the magazine are published.
