The School of Engineering's new Liverpool Logistics, Offshore and Marine or LOOM Centre has been awarded research centre status by LJMU.

Dr Eleye-Datubo, Mr Saajedi and Professor Wang receiving their Denny Medals from the IMarEST President, Professor Choo in London on 13 March 2008.The aim of the Centre is to promote the development of management information and decision support systems within the marine, offshore and logistics sectors.

LOOM supersedes and replaces the Marine, Offshore and Transport Research Group (MORG), which has produced 15 PhD completions since its creation in 1998.

LOOM consists of nine academic members, nine associate members and 13 doctoral/postdoctoral members. Its research interests include the management of risk and reliability and the development of management tools supporting design and operation of offshore systems, ships, port terminals, road transport systems and supply chains.

LOOM recently secured two EPSRC grants of £135k and £248k along with a KTP grant of £122k. Some of its members have also won awards for their research work. Professor Wang won a Research Leadership Award in Risk and Safety Assessment of Marine Engineering Systems from the Society for Reliability Engineering, Quality and Operations Management, India in January 2008. Dr Eleye-Datubo, Dr Wall, Mr Saajedi and Professor Wang won a prestigious Denny Model from the IMarEST for their work on formal ship safety assessment in March 2008.
