Lights Out Liverpool

25 March 2009

In Liverpool’s ‘Year of the Environment’, LJMU have teamed up with cities, towns and municipalities around the world to support the 2009 World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Earth Hour.

The Lights Out Liverpool flyerWWF are asking everyone in Liverpool to switch off non-essential lighting for 1 hour from 8.30pm on Saturday 28 March.

Liverpool aims to show to the world that it will be doing its part in helping to protect the environment with sites, including LJMU, across the city having already pledged their support.

In the UK, 480 schools - that’s over 100,000 children - and 45 local authorities are taking part. Some 50 UK landmarks, including Nelson’s Column, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and the Forth Bridge have committed to switching off their lights, and the London Eye will also be dimmed. Global icons such as the Eiffel Tower, Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Sydney Opera House and Table Mountain in Cape Town will be plunged into darkness for the hour.

Anyone can support WWF’s Earth Hour, to show that you care about people, wildlife and the planet, by signing up and switching off your non-essential lights for one hour, either at home or at work, and encouraging everyone you know to do the same.
