GOALS Awards Evening
07 May 2009
Families from across the Northwest attended an awards ceremony recently to celebrate the healthy targets they have achieved by participating on the GOALS programme.
The event, hosted by LJMU’s Paula Watson, GOALS Project Manager, and organised by Katie Pickering, GOALS Service Co-ordinator and Physical Activity Specialist, was attended by over 100 people, made up of GOALS families, LJMU staff and guest delegates from Liverpool Primary Care Trust and Liverpool City Council.
GOALS (Getting Our Active Lifestyles Started!) is a healthy lifestyle programme for obese children and their families, run by LJMU in partnership with Liverpool Primary Care Trust, Liverpool City Council, Alder Hey Hospital and the University of Salford. The programme is all about supporting whole families in making small, sustainable changes to their eating and physical activity habits - helping families build healthy changes into their lives gradually, in a way that works for them.
The evening kicked off with a joint welcome from Gideon Ben-Tovim, Chair of Liverpool Primary Care Trust, and Councillor Ron Gould, Executive Member for Health, Liverpool City Council. This was followed by a breathtaking martial arts performance from the Al Ghazali Karate group. Other highlights of the evening were an outstanding show of contemporary dance by Urban Street Stars and a unique version of ‘Rise and Shine’ from the GOALS staff.
The awards were presented by Everton FC players James Wallace and Gerard Kinsella. 73 children and adults have earned certificates for completing GOALS this year, and the children were invited up to collect them and have their photograph taken with the players.
