LJMU staff were runners-up in a recent charity football tournament featuring a host of ex-LFC and EFC players.
The LJMU staff football team entered this year’s annual 'Beating Bowel Cancer' charity football tournament last week to raise money and awareness for bowel cancer, aided by funding from the LJMU Staff Community Development Fund.
The tournament teams included Aintree Blades (captained by former LFC left back Alan Kennedy), University Hospital Aintree, the Liverpool Echo (captained by former EFC player Graham Stuart) and the University of Liverpool staff team.
Each team had a sprinkling of ex-reds and blues that had LJMU lining-up with David Fairclough (formerly known as the Super Sub) up front. To reach the final LJMU played Alan Kennedy’s team in a semi-final that included Howard Gail (former LFC player). LJMU won 2-0 with Barry Connolly scoring the first goal with a 30-yard curler which soared into the top corner of the net. The second LJMU goal resulted from a pass between from Darren Trinder to Andy Keegan who shot outside the area straight over the keeper’s head.
It was a great team performance which resulted in a cup final appearance against the Liverpool Echo, whose team included three ex-professionals. After a brilliant first half performance by LJMU and a well taken penalty by Barry Connolly, the team reached half time level at 1-1. Unfortunately a great second half performance by Stewart Barlow and Graham Stuart resulted in a 3-1 defeat for LJMU. The team played well and the runners-up trophy takes pride of place in their trophy room with the five-a-side league winner’s trophy, making it a good season overall for LJMU staff.
