Volunteering projects

28 May 2009

LJMU Volunteering have a number of opporunities and information sessions for staff interested in getting involved.

North End Writers

North End Writers is a registered charity that aims to provide creative opportunities and a forum for writers living in North Liverpool, including those who have missed out on education or opportunities because of domestic responsibilities, exclusion, discrimination, poverty or misfortune.  In addition to this, they hold workshops, performance evenings and sessions with guest speakers.

The charity relies on volunteers to help run it.  Its success means it is continuing to grow and grow and so they are in need of volunteers to work with them in the following areas:

  • Committee work
  • Marketing
  • Event management
  • Office based volunteers to help with running the community office

They will be facilitating a session on Thursday 4 June between 4:30pm and 6pm in room 2a, 1st floor, Kingsway House, Graduate Development Centre.  All staff are welcome to come along and hear about the range of volunteering opportunities that are available with the charity. Please email volunteering@ljmu.ac.uk or call ext: 3159 to confirm your place or for more information.

Claire House

Claire House is a children’s hospice which looks after children with life-shortening conditions from Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and the Isle of Man.  They offer respite, palliative and end of life care to currently over 400 children from 0-23 years at no cost to families.

On Monday 15, Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 June, they are looking for volunteers to do some painting on one of the floors of the hospice on any of these days.  This will simply be doing some prep and painting to make the area look a bit brighter for the children.  It would make an excellent team challenge for you and your colleagues, or alternatively, Claire House welcomes individuals to go along and help out.

Please email volunteering@ljmu.ac.uk for more information or call ext: 3159/3465.

Challenge 500 with the Princes Trust

In teams of up to 6 people, employees will compete alongside other teams in LJMU to raise £500 for The Prince’s Trust.

Each team will work together to decide which activity to do and how they’ll go about raising money.

Teams can be made up of employees from different divisions or departments, so there should be plenty of inspiration and experience to build on.

Innovation and teamwork are vital if teams are to raise the money in four weeks starting from the kick-off. The sky’s the limit – previous participants have successfully organised a rubber duck race, cheese and wine tasting party, doughnut sale, and speed-dating event.

On Tuesday 9 June, there will be an information evening open to all interested in participating in Challenge 500.  For more information please email Lucy McGrath at L.M.McGrath@ljmu.ac.uk or call  ext: 3850.
