The Institute for Health Research (IHR) held its second annual conference on the 15 May in LJMU’s new Art and Design Academy.

IHR conference delegatesThe conference, entitled ‘Applied Research for Better Health’, attracted over 100 delegates from all areas of health research throughout the University as well as representatives from external organisations.

The conference was opened by Professor Greg Whyte from the School of Sports Sciences.  The keynote presentation was delivered by Professor David Burton, Director of General Engineering Research Institute, with an interesting and informative presentation entitled ‘3-4D Macro and Micro Imaging Meets Medicine’.  This was followed by an invited presentation entitled ‘The Specialist Biomedical Research Centre at Liverpool’ by Professor Peter Winstanley from the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre.

In addition, the conference played host to a successful poster competition where staff and students had previously been asked to submit abstracts relating to their research for shortlisting.  Successful entrants were asked to produce a poster for display and three additional staff and students were asked to make an oral presentation on the subject of their poster.  The quality and high standards of this competition were widely praised.

The conference also heard from members of staff who were successful applicants for the IHR Research Fund 2008.  Professor Keith George from RISES, Michela Morleo from the Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences and Dr Ian Jarman from the Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences and the School of Computing and Mathematics all informed the delegates of the research that the IHR Research Fund has supported.
