Walking on the dunes
10 June 2009
Faculty students and staff engage with the local community whilst raising money for charity.
In September 2007 the Student Mentoring Service (SMS) initiative was first introduced by Frances Colbron, senior lecturer in the Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences. The service was originally set up to offer a network of student mentors who can assist first year university students settle into university life.
As well as providing support for first year students, the SMS are aiming to organise events and activities that all LJMU students can enjoy, together with staff and members of the local community. The first of these events for the Student Mentoring Service was a ‘Walk for Charity’ from Crosby Promenade to Hightown Dunes and back.
The day was a great success with over 100 walkers taking part. Students, staff and members of the local community all turned up and showed their support. Sponsorship money is expected to exceed over £1000 for Liverpool Red Balloon – James Bulger House. The charity specialises in providing a safe learning environment for children who have been severely bullied. James Bulger House will be a sanctuary for students between the ages of 10 and 17 who are no longer in mainstream school.
James Bulger's mother Denise Fergus is a trustee of Liverpool Red Balloon and is actively working with the fundraising campaign. She started the walk off on behalf of Frances and the SMS.
Frances commented: “The student mentors truly got behind this worthwhile project and did a wonderful job. Thanks to the events team, in particular Kate Hawtin, for helping to arrange this first Student Mentoring Service charity event - and thank you to all sponsors.”
