Welcome to E-Merge
e-merge Issue 3 March 2011
Welcome to the third and expanded issue of e-merge. e-merge is part of a growing number of undergraduate e-journals that provide fora for first class student work and expand the possibilities for embedding the research process in the curriculum. Our second issue draws together contributions from across the School of Social Science, each demonstrating the critical edge that marks a first class piece.
This issue contains a range of contemporary and historical debates, with articles covering the Second World War to the present day. Two pieces examine the role of the media: Jesse’s article considers the relationship between the British newspaper press and commercial pressures in the Second World War, whilst Hoppers article provides a content analysis of newspaper reportage of torture at Guantanamo Bay. Other articles have an international focus; Joab’s work looks at the complex issues around definitions of the ‘Jewish State’ and Israel’s relationship with liberal democracy. Rose’s article analyses the rise of China as an economic power and looks at the environmental and population issues arising from this growth. Dolan examines the contribution of Huey P. Newton the Black Civil Rights Movement in the United States of America. The final two pieces examine contempaoray issues in the UK. Rinner’s piece examines the mariginalisation of the Gypsy- Traveller community in the UK whilst Andrews’ provides a critical examination of the role and future of Universities under the previous Labour government. We are currently working with staff and students of the School of Humanities Social Science to produce the fourth edition of e-merge which will include work from the Humanities as well as Social Science.
