Graduate Development Centre becomes World of Work Careers Centre

Before the start of this academic year Corporate Communications conducted a piece of market research with prospective students, their parents and a selected employer group. One of the aims of the research was to gain a better understanding of the perception of the World of Work programme and employability at LJMU.

The feedback revealed that young people, students, employers and parents thought the services offered by the Graduate Development Centre were invaluable and, to that end, they felt the name of the Centre could more explicitly reflect its outstanding work.

Terry Dray, Director of Graduate Advancement and Employer Engagement comments:

"As a result of the research, and work that we have been undertaking with Michele Ibbs and the Students' Union on how we communicate with prospective and current students, the Senior Management Group recently agreed to evolve the terminology we use to describe employability and career development provision.

"The Graduate Development Centre will be renamed the World of Work Careers Centre. We will take a phased approach to introduce the new name. My team will now start to make the significant necessary changes to incorporate the new title. This may take some time but all work should be complete by the start of the 2012/13 academic year."

In order to avoid unnecessary expenditure in changing the name mid-way through the academic year, materials currently in circulation will remain unchanged. All materials in development to support the recruitment cycle, the open day, enrolment for 2012 and new student material will use the term World of Work in full and not the acronym WoW.

By 1 September, all reference to WoW and the GDC, in printed form and on the web, should be replaced with the new title, this includes module and programme handbooks as well as guides and support materials developed in Faculties and Services areas.

Criminal Justice Employability Conference 2011

Criminal Justice Employability Conference – Enhancing World of Work Skills

A Criminal Justice Employability Conference took place just before Christmas with the event incorporating a networking session with employers from the legal sector.

Ester Ragonese, Senior Lecturer on the Criminal Justice programme, worked together with the Graduate Development Centre to host the event for level 5 students on a Professional Development module.

During the module students look at World of Work skills, and the conference was designed to give the students a chance to meet external organisations and find out about the work that they do and any volunteering opportunities that were available with the agencies.

Companies in attendance included North Liverpool Community Justice Centre, CELLS Project, Victim Support, Altcourse Prison, YMCA, Genie in the Gutter and The Basement Advisory Service.

The event also opened its doors to students from any programme and over 100 students attended the day. Feedback from both employers and students was very positive.

Peter O'Donnell, from North Liverpool Community Justice Centre, commented: ‘The standard of questioning by the students was very refreshing and challenging on a wide variety of judicial subjects. The format was very well managed and enabled all students to get an insight on all the organisations and exchange contact details to allow follow ups. The time was well used networking and useful exchanges and contacts made with other organisations.’

Kevin Eccleston, from Liverpool YMCA, said: ‘We enjoyed the relaxed format of the occasion and it was a pleasure to meet the students. We also had the opportunity to meet with other providers and enhance our strategic aims.’

Pamela Davies from Victim Support said: ‘I found the event very beneficial; it gave Victim Support an opportunity to promote our services and link in with students. This event gave students insight into what we do and gave them information so they are able to make informed choices for their future.

One student commented: ‘I enjoyed the speed networking with different employers. It has given me more information about employment opportunities and I have gained useful contact details.’

Another student said: ‘It gave a varied outline of career opportunities and I now have a better understanding of different careers available to me.’

The Graduate Development Centre conducted research with the organisations who attended, and the results showed that graduate skills, work-related learning and World of Work skills, the three elements that make up the World of Work Programme, are greatly valued by employers in this sector.

LJMU & WoW Success at the EFQM Excellence Awards 2011

Liverpool John Moores University has been awarded a prize for 'Building Partnerships' at the EFQM Excellence Awards 2011 at a ceremony in Munich last night.

The only university to be awarded a prize this year, LJMU was noted for its World of Work (WoW) programme and the Collaborative Partnership Handbook as two examples of strong, innovative partnership building actions.

During the site visit, the Assessor Team was impressed with the structured approach adopted, range of partnerships formed and additional value generated. They concluded: "LJMU recognises that partnerships are crucial to future success, in terms of attracting students, securing additional income streams and enhancing their reputation; both within the UK and on the international market place. Their World of Work programme and the Collaborative Partnership Handbook are only two examples of strong, innovative partnership building actions."

Pierre Cachet, Chief Executive Officer (EFQM), commented: "Liverpool John Moores University sets an example to other educational sector organisations. They are the only University to be awarded a Prize this year! We hope that LJMU can inspire others. Moreover, we recognise their WoW programme as a good practice. LJMU has well combined major partnerships with business and public sector employers through this programme."

Paul Evans, Director of Business Excellence at Liverpool John Moores University, said: "We are delighted to win this prestigious prize which demonstrates the work we have put into building partnerships to benefit our students and business and industry."

Terry Dray, LJMU Director of Graduate Advancement and Employer Engagement added: "The World of Work programme is co-designed and co-delivered with employer partners across all sectors and as a result this unique LJMU employability model has added real world relevance."

Eighteen organisations were selected as Finalists and nine prizes awarded; with such a high number a clear signal that Business Excellence is a vital strategy for European organisations and at the top of the business agenda.

National Law Firm Helps LJMU Students Prepare for the World of Work

LJMU's Terry Dray with Simon Price of DWF

National law firm DWF has joined the ever-growing list of companies supporting LJMU’s World of Work Programme with 17 employees from the firm’s Liverpool office training as WoW Skills Certificate Interview Verifiers.

The partnership between the university and the law firm is coordinated by Simon Price, a Professional and Client Development Lawyer in DWF’s litigation team, who has previously worked with students through his innovative Modern Lawyer programme. The project is also supported by Maria Burquest, Head of DWF’s Education Sector, Carl Graham, Partner at DWF’s Liverpool office, and Tyrone Jones, Head of Values and Corporate Responsibility at DWF.

Simon commented: “In a highly competitive marketplace, graduates need more than just good qualifications to stand out from their peers. They also need to be able to show potential employers that they’ve got practical aptitude too. This is why DWF was so keen to get involved with this programme. All the volunteers from our Liverpool office have been really enthusiastic about passing on their skills, knowledge and experience to the students.”

Maria added: “LJMU’s pioneering World of Work programme is to be commended. The university is doing all it can to prepare its graduates for the real world. Mentoring the students has been a fantastic experience and it’s inspiring to be around such ambitious young adults.”

Help shape the future of online recruitment and win an iPhone, iPad 2 or vouchers

Liverpool John Moores University is cooperating with Potentialpark in an international study on the communication between students and employers.

Searching and applying for jobs online is often time-consuming and frustrating. Furthermore, employers do not always know the best way to communicate via mobile applications and social media platforms. We would like to change that. Therefore we ask for your opinion in a short survey. This is your chance to tell employers how you would like online communication and recruitment to work. Every year, our study is read by many of the top employers worldwide and influences the development of career websites, mobile phone applications and social media communication.

Please click here to take part in the survey

The survey is anonymous and takes about 15 minutes to complete. It is independent and not sponsored by any company. The survey is available until the end of October 2011.

What's in it for me?

  • You will shape the future of online recruitment so that it will become easier to find the right career opportunities and to apply for jobs online.
  • We will share the results with you, if you want.
  • You will learn more about the latest trends in online recruitment and gain insights that will be valuable for your own career.
  • You can win the latest iPhone, an iPad 2, one of 25 vouchers (Amazon, iTunes, Sodexo or Dangdang) or one of 500 iHipo.com membership.

The results will be published in the worldwide media in spring 2012.

Matrix Assessment Report Feedback Quotes

The Graduate Development Centre (GDC) recently successfully achieved the Matrix standard, an important Department of Business, Innovation and Skills quality standard for information, advice and guidance on learning and work.

A EMQC Matrix assessor spent 3 days at the GDC interviewing GDC staff, members of the employer community and LJMU senior management, academics and students.  Here are some quotes pulled from the feedback report from the Assessor:

“The support for students here is very good and you can decide what support you need. It’s a lot more than just a careers service”. Student

“The GDC puts students first and this approach provides a platform of excellence and support”. EMQC Assessor

"The GDC has gained the trust and respect of the students”. EMQC Assessor

“The GDC is very proactive and listens”. Student

“I would not be here today prepared and ready for work without the GDC”. Student

The Assessor has also recommended that the GDC now considers undergoing a further assessment for a MATRIX Excellence Award. Relatively few universities are recommended to pursue this and it would involve the GDC focussing upon one aspect of provision.

Peugeot aids GDC Delivery Team expertise

As part of the Graduate Development Centre Delivery Team’s commitment to be as expert and informed as possible when it comes to understanding how employers recruit graduates, GDC Careers Adviser Laura Aldridge recently observed an employer assessment centre in action when she attended Peugeot’s Assessment Centre in Coventry.

Peugeot were recruiting for an industrial placement vacancy and Laura observed the whole assessment process which candidates have to undergo and had the chance to watch a group exercise and a series of interviews. She also received a valuable insight into how employers assess and evaluate applicants against strict criteria.

Laura stated; “My observation of the Peugeot Assessment Centre demonstrated to me just how rigorous the selection process is which students and graduates have to go through to be successful in gaining a job or placement with a large company. It emphasises the need for students to be prepared to give evidence of their strengths as the interviewers used scenario based questions which required candidates to give an example of when he or she had used a particular skill. This demonstrates the importance of students undertaking the World of Work Skills Certificate as the self-awareness part of the certificate requires students to reflect on their skills and areas of development”.

GDC Careers Advisers and Employability Advisers have attended many similar assessment centres and careers days across a variety of sectors to gather essential up to date intelligence on the graduate recruitment process to disseminate to students and staff. For more information contact the GDC on 0151 231 8099 or email gdc@ljmu.ac.uk.

Graduate Development Centre works with Rolls Royce and the British Council in Hanoi

Representatives from LJMU’s Graduate Development Centre (GDC) were recently invited to Hanoi by Rolls Royce and the British Council in Vietnam.

The request to visit the Vietnamese capital came about because of LJMU’s unique approach to employability and supporting individuals to develop World of Work (WoW) skills and attributes.

Terry Dray and Jo Ives from the GDC and Jeff Soong from LJMU’s Malaysia office spent three days in April undertaking a scoping study involving Vietnamese state owned enterprises in Hanoi.

The enterprises in attendance included Petro Vietnam, Vietnamese Airlines, Electricity Vietnam and also the Hanoi School of Business with discussions centering on how they approached the training and development of graduate employees and managers.

During discussions the WoW Skills Certificate approach was discussed resulting in a number of positive responses thus further reinforcing the relevance of LJMU’s labour market matching model to economies across the world.

GDC Director Terry Dray said: “This was a really useful trip and it was great to meet such high profile state enterprises and discuss how LJMU had taken the lead in developing graduates for the knowledge economy. The GDC has now discussed LJMU’s unique and pioneering approach to employability with representatives from Malaysia, Kenya and the USA and the interest from around the world shows the strength of the model and vindicates the university’s decision to put a student’s employability right at the top of its agenda.”

GDC online at the Guardian Higher Education Network

Join the online Q&A on graduate employability on Friday 27 May between 1.00 and 4.00pm.

The economic shocks that caused the financial crisis may be behind us but its effects are still being felt - particularly in the jobs market. The shortage of graduate positions has led to many debates about apprenticeships vs. university degrees or more generally, whether higher education is equipping students with the skills they need to enter a more competitive work place. A degree itself is no longer enough.
On Friday 27 May, The Guardian will bring together a panel from within Higher Education (both undergraduate and postgraduate study) and the private sector to consider what more could be done to improve graduate employability. The LJMU Graduate Development Centre (GDC) members and students will be joining this online Question and Answer session, offering advice and support on careers, employability, work-related learning and the LJMU WoW® (World of work) Skills Certificate.

This intensive day of workshops considers all three WoW Skills areas (Self Awareness, Organisational Awareness, Making Things Happen). You’ll learn how to articulate and demonstrate these skills, which will help you write more effective CVs and job applications.

Come to any or all of the workshops, as is right for you:

  • The morning (9.30am-12.45pm) covers Self Awareness and how to write a Bronze statement, so is suited to those getting started.
  • The afternoon covers Organisational Awareness/Silver statements (1.30pm-2.30pm) followed by Making Things Happen/Gold statements (2.45pm-3.45pm), with a final Q&A session to 4pm.

You can also come back to another camp at a later date, if you don’t want to do all the workshops in one go.

NB: WoW Boot Camps are designed for students in their final or penultimate year of study – but any students who are reasonably confident in their WoW skills are welcome to attend!

Prospects Launch Improved Job Search Facility for International Students and Graduates

AGCAS, HECSU, NASES and The Careers Group, University of London, working in partnership, have undertaken enhancements to the International Graduate Jobs on Prospects.ac.uk as a result of research with international students and graduates, employers and careers professionals. The work has been funded by the Prime Minister's Initiative for International Education (PMI 2) and develops the work undertaken in a previous PMI 2 project which saw The Careers Group, University of London's International Job Online made available through Prospects.ac.uk.

Improvements have addressed the key points made by careers advisers in the research namely that international students and graduates needed to take a more strategic approach to their job search, and also the following issues for international students and graduates:

  • Helping them avoid a "scattergun approach" applying for anything and everything
  • Encouraging them to look for information, advice and guidance – not "just vacancies"
  • Helping them develop their awareness of effective job search strategies
  • Helping them improve their understanding of the application process

In addition to improving the search functionality, the general interface and usability of International Graduate Jobs the new system will include value added content to address some of the issues raised. This will be achieved through contextual links to content related to the job ad the user is viewing. For example if they are looking at a job in China there will be links to the AGCAS Country Profiles and the i-graduate Country Guides which include example CVs, plus more general information about working abroad.

The enhanced International Graduate Jobs was launched in early March and will also be promoted to international students and graduates, employers and student employment services.

    The Graduate Market in 2011

The latest research on 'The Graduate Market in 2011' was published on 18 January. The research is based on a survey of the organisations featured in The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers, conducted in December 2010.

The key findings presented in the report are:

    • The UK's leading employers are expecting to increase their graduate recruitment by 9.4% in 2011, following a rise of 12.6% in entry-level roles for university-leavers during 2010. Graduate vacancies dropped by 17.8% in 2009 and 6.7% in 2008.
    • Three-fifths of employers expect to recruit more graduates in 2011 whilst a quarter plan to maintain their intake at 2010 levels.
    • The leading accountancy & professional services firms are intending to hire almost 10% more graduates than in 2010, an increase of more than 350 trainees year-on-year. There will also be substantial increases to the graduate intake at the City¹s top investment banks (up 12.2% compared to 2010) and the high street banks (up 24.8%).
    • Employers in thirteen of fourteen key industries and employment areas expect to recruit more graduates in 2011. However, recruitment targets at several public sector employers have already been reduced and further cuts are expected later in the year.
    • Although the total number of vacancies is set to increase in 2011, recruiters have confirmed that a third of this year¹s entry-level positions are expected to be filled by graduates who have already worked for their organisations either through industrial placements, vacation work or sponsorships and therefore are not open to other graduates from the ŒClass of 2011¹.
    • The largest recruiters of graduates in 2011 will be PricewaterhouseCoopers (1,200 vacancies), Deloitte (1,000 vacancies), KPMG (900 vacancies), the Teach First scheme (780 vacancies) and Ernst & Young (740 vacancies).
    • A quarter of top graduate programmes will pay new recruits a starting salary of more than £30,000 when they begin work and seven organisations are offering at least £40,000 to this year¹s graduates.
    • The most generous salaries are those on offer from investment banks (average of £42,000), law firms (average of £38,000) and oil & energy companies (average of £32,000).
    • Public sector employers (average of £22,200), retailers (average of £24,000) and engineering & industrial companies (average of £24,500) have the lowest graduate pay rates for 2011.
    • Half the employers featured in the research have received more graduate applications during the early part of the recruitment season than they did last year. By the end of the 2010 graduate recruitment round, employers had received an average of 45 applications per vacancy.
    • Almost all of the UK¹s top graduate employers are offering work experience programmes for students and recent graduates during the 2010-2011 academic year a total of 10,665 places are available.
    • Three-fifths of employers are providing industrial placements for undergraduates (typically for 6-12 months) or vacation work lasting more than three weeks.
    • Nearly two-thirds of recruiters caution that graduates who have had no previous work experience at all are unlikely to be successful during the selection process and have little or no chance of receiving a job offer for their organisations¹ graduate programmes.
    • At least half the graduate vacancies advertised this year by City investment banks and the leading law firms are likely to be filled by graduates who have already completed work experience with the employer.

Work related learning and volunteering fair

Work Related Learning and Volunteering Fair Video Online

The Graduate Development Centre's Brokerage Team recently organised LJMU's first Work Related Learning and Volunteering Fair at the Art & Design Academy.

The fair was open to LJMU students of all disciplines across all faculties, with the aim of helping them find work related learning for credit bearing modules or work experience to increase their employability skills and workplace experience. The event enabled charities and non-profit organisations who had work related learning opportunities to interact with students in an informal and friendly environment.

All of the organisations who attended still have opportunities available for students of any discipline: media, marketing, social work, finance, administration, business, medicine, policy, lobbying, legal, outreach and many more. Click on the image or click here to watch the video and see what opportunities are available.

    WoW Graduation Video

    WoW Graduation Video Online

LJMU celebrated its first cohort of World of Work (WoW) Gold Star Graduates at a prestigious event hosted by WoW Board partner Marks and Spencer recently and the video of the event is now online.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Brown commented: “This event was a fantastic way for us to celebrate the achievements of our first WoW pioneers and recognise their employment success. Building on a completely changed degree approach for all programmes, students volunteer for this globally-unique programme and over 4,000 have engaged with it so far. As the benefits of using this programme during a particularly competitive job market become more apparent, even more are signing up now and linking with employers while building up their skills and studying. Effectively it offers students the chance to leave university with a full employability package.

“The Government recently announced that it wants to strengthen ties between universities and industries. The LJMU WoW programme shows the world how it can be done – a full partnership between a university and business from start to finish and LJMU is now planning future innovations in this area.

“Marks and Spencer have provided guidance, advice and support for the programme since the very beginning so it was a natural choice that they should host this event.”

WoW skills certificate launched in Malaysia

A team from the Graduate Development Centre (GDC) were in Malaysia recently for the launch of the WoW certificate pilot project with students from the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

The launch event was hosted by UiTM’s Vice Chancellor, Dato’ Prof. Ir. Dr. Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar, with Jo Ives, Deputy Director of the GDC, representing LJMU.

The event was also attended by members of the newly formed Malaysian WoW Employers Board - Deloitte Consulting, the British Council, HSBC, GlaxoSmithKline and the Malaysian Employers Federation, in addition to the 100 UiTM students who are participating in the pilot.

Also present was the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education, who have funded the project on behalf of the higher education sector to assess the feasibility of the LJMU WoW skills model for their institutions.

Following the successful launch, the team from the GDC and the LJMU South East Asia regional office then spent the weekend delivering a packed agenda of WoW skills workshops and sessions to get the students started with our unique employability programme. The students come from a variety of disciplines across the university and are all in their final year of study, and the evaluation of the weekend’s activities was overwhelmingly positive.

One student commented: “WoW is a good programme that will help me to stand out from the crowd. It helped me to build my confidence and improve my English language as well. I hope this programme will continue for other Malaysian students.”

Another said: “I’m very pleased and grateful to have joined this programme. It’s once in a lifetime opportunity. The trainers were lovely; they explained everything in detail. I wish the sessions could be held longer. It really motivates me to study and get a great job. Best time I ever had.”

Charlotte Corke the GDC Delivery Team Manager enjoyed her first Malaysian visit: “It was an excellent weekend, the students were delightful and seemed to really enjoy getting grips with their Self Awareness. They have already started to submit their WoW Bronze statements and we are looking forward to joining them again in January, when we will be having a further weekend delivery of sessions around the ‘Organisational Awareness’ element of WoW.”

    WoW GraduatesWoW Graduation Ceremony

LJMU celebrated its first cohort of World of Work (WoW) Gold Star Graduates at a prestigious event hosted by WoW Board partner Marks and Spencer on 3 November. A gallery of photos from the event is available via the LJMU Facebook page.

WoW was launched three years ago, and has been continually refined and adapted to give graduates the best possible start in their professional lives. Many have progressed rapidly in their chosen career path or set up successful businesses. Graduates attending this event have worked to the very highest level possible to achieve the WoW certificate and now have careers ranging from positions in local councils, media, teaching, retail and health.

WoW Gold Star Graduate, Danny Randles, 22, who went into NHS employment a day after his graduation is now a Student Cardiac Physiologist at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital - NHS Foundation Trust. “I signed up to WoW as I noticed that the NHS was an Advisory Board Member and thought this partnership link would help me in my career path, and it certainly did with many more benefits. The WoW programme linked me to mock interviews with people from the NHS, which prepared me completely for the real thing, boosting my confidence and ensuring that I had the right skills to answer questions and come across confident and employable.

“The WoW programme is an excellent chance to stand out and employers are always impressed. I am proud to be part of the first set of graduates and would encourage students to take advantage of this service for whatever industry they want to be in.”

WoW Gold Star Graduate Jennifer Blackburn who studied Dance Studies with Choreography and Performance, is now a Project co-ordinator and Facilitator for Spiral Dance, and doing freelance work as a Project Manager and Artist for DanceSyndrome, explains the importance of the programme.

“WoW offered the perfect opportunity for a joined up approach for everything I wanted and needed to do to increase my employability while I was studying. All students should take advantage of this easily accessible system which fits in well with all degrees and is respected and recognised by employers.”

    Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Brown commented:

“This event was a fantastic way for us to celebrate the achievements of our first WoW pioneers and recognise their employment success. Building on a completely changed degree approach for all programmes, students volunteer for this globally-unique programme and over 3,000 have engaged with it so far.

Julie Ridley, store manager at M&S Liverpool, said:

“It's important that when graduates leave university they are equipped with the skills that will help them to stand out from the crowd and reach their full potential.

“That's why we're delighted to be supporting the World of Work programme at Liverpool John Moores, helping students to understand what will be required of them when they begin applying for their first jobs after their degrees.

“We would like to congratulate the Gold Star graduates for proving they have the talent and experience to succeed in their future careers and wish them the very best of luck in achieving their career aspirations."

WoW in Conversation with Women and succesful leadershipWoW in Conversation with Women and Successful Leadership

Three female industry leaders discussed the challenges of leadership and shared personal reflections of being successful in their working environment to students and staff at the Graduate Development Centre on 3rd November.

Julie Ridley, Liverpool Store Manager for Marks and Spencer, Denise Barrett-Baxendale, Chief Executive of the Everton Foundation, and Gill Palmer, Vice-President at Oracle Corporation (all pictured), addressed students and staff, with the session facilitated by Pro Vice Chancellor Michele Ibbs. All three discussed how they achieved their current roles, the types of leaders they are and the advice they would give to aspiring women leaders.

Julie Ridley, who recently led the Liverpool M & S store through the planning and launch of the Church Street Store major re-development, commented:

"Marks & Spencer supports LJMU on its World of Work programme which helps students to leave university with the right skills to for the workplace, as well as their degrees.

"It's great to work with a university that uses its initiative to help its students in their future careers and I'm delighted to have been asked to take part in this event.

"In my view great leadership comes from understanding the business you work in and the ability to motivate and inspire staff. I was pleased to be able to answer the questions students had about how to do well in their future careers."

Gill Palmer, who is also the EMEA Executive Sponsor for Oracle Women's Leadership and a member of the Technology Leadership Group for The Prince's Trust, said:

“Oracle are delighted to support the 'World at Work' programme and its events. We value the opportunity to contribute directly to a graduate's ability to differentiate themselves in the current business environment.”

Denise Barrett-Baxendale, who took over as the new chief executive of the Everton Foundation earlier this year, a club-backed charity which goes into the community with projects promoting health, education and equality, explained:

“I was pleased to take part in this event and offer LJMU students advice and guidance on successful leadership. My career focus has always been to look at creating life chances and choices for people who might not have had the opportunities or the privileges that many others do.”

    LJMU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Michele Ibbs said:

“We were delighted to welcome three outstanding female leaders, who each have their own individual success story and different pathway of achieving this. This event really helped to inspire and motivate our students and staff, with an informative and relaxed session that promoted the accessibility of becoming successful in business.”

Official Signing for Malaysian WoWUniversiti Teknologi Mara Vice Chancellor and Terry Dray shake hands on the WoW Certificate pilot in Malaysia

LJMU's Graduate Development Centre recently welcomed the Vice Chancellor of the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) for the official signing of the LJMU WoW® (World of Work) Certificate Pilot in Malaysia.

Delivery of this unique international one-year LJMU programme will see the WoW certificate offered to 100 Malaysian students. UiTM, which is Malaysia’s largest public university, has earned a reputation as being one of Malaysia's innovative and entrepreneurial universities, as it has formed linkages with numerous and diverse industrial sectors.

This international partnership work has also led to the formation of a WoW Malaysian Employer Advisory Group to influence the design and delivery of the pilot programme. The group includes senior managers from GlaxoSmithKline, HSBC, Deloitte, ICAEW, DRB-HICOM, CTRM Aero Composites and Shell.

Dr Norsaadah Ismail, Director Industry Relations Division, Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education commented: “We at the Industry Relations Division of the Ministry of Higher Education, which has responsibility for the graduate employability agenda, feel that WoW is a unique formula to make graduates employable. We hope that as a result of the LJMU Graduate Development Centre and our largest public university working as partners, the level of graduate employment will be enhanced.”

Dato' Prof. Ir. Dr. Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar, FASc, Vice Chancellor of UiTM said: “LJMU’s focus as a business-engaged institution is perfectly aligned with the entrepreneurial culture of UiTM. The official signing of this contract is therefore excellent news in terms of graduate employability in Malaysia.”

Terry Dray, Director of the Graduate Development Centre added: “Like the UK, Malaysia needs a graduate talent pipeline that is producing highly employable graduates fit for a knowledge economy. The LJMU WoW approach and the certificate process requires that students reflect on their work-related skills and competence and that they can confidently articulate to an employer interviewer that they have the necessary evidence to be an asset in the world of work.

We have an excellent relationship with our Malaysian colleagues and are honoured to be working with them on such an important strategic agenda. We are set to see many exciting opportunities for graduate skills development in Malaysia and some great international links for LJMU students.”

    Graduate Labour Market in 2010

Latest research on 'The Graduate Market in 2010' was published this week.

Terry Dray, Director of the LJMU Graduate Development Centre commented: “While some sectors are reporting that they will be looking for more graduates in 2010 the competition for jobs is still fierce with the class of 2009 and those who have completed internships securing many positions. For LJMU students the need to get the WoW certificate is compelling as the graduates who secure positions will be those who are the most organised, motivated and can provide evidence of possessing employability skills and attributes e.g the WoW certificate”

The research is based on a survey of the organisations featured in The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers and a poll of 1,000 student job hunters, conducted in December 2009.

WoW Boot Camps at the Graduate Development Centre

Are you graduating this summer? Breathing a sigh of relief now that your studies are complete? But have you thought about what happens next and how you can move into your first professional job?

The Graduate Development Centre (GDC) can help. We are offering opportunities to achieve our employer backed WoW® or World of Work certificate that can help you stand out from the crowd and fast track you into the world of work. Although the current economic climate is gloomy, University-leavers who have not secured a job need a clear message: the search for work is far from hopeless!

To succeed on our ‘fast track’ route you will need to have either completed a work placement as part of your course or have got some work experience. This will help you through the process and you could still achieve a WoW® certificate in time for Graduation.

Over the next few weeks, the Graduate Development Centre is running a series of WoW® Boot Camps - intensive, fast track WoW® support days, where you can:
    • Do an audit and gap analysis of your existing world of work skills – this will help you with your own job applications!
    • Find out what is required for a WoW® Personal Statement (similar to graduate application forms)
    • Use the GDC’s facilities and support to draft your statement – careers advisers, trainers and employability advisors will be on hand!
    • Get rapid feedback on the day, to allow you to complete your statement.

Why not help yourself get on the inside track and learn the secrets of making successful graduate applications and experience a final interview with a real employer!– and its all free!

Book yourself onto one of our WoW® Boot Camps on 17th or 24th June, plus an extra day on 25th June particularly for International Students.

Ring 0151 231 8099 or visit www.ljmu.ac.uk/WoW for more information and to book a place.

Invest in your future - just a few hours can make a big difference!

GDC Announces 'Recession Buster 09' programme

The Graduate Development Centre has announced ‘Recession Buster 09’ to help graduates fast track themselves into the World of Work with a WoW® certificate.

During May and June 2009, the GDC is running an intensive programme of workshops and support to help final year students through the WoW® process to achieve our employer backed WoW® certificate. The first stage is an online diagnostic interview, followed by development workshops if needed, culminating in the production of a personal statement and final employer interview. Students are assigned a coach to guide them through the process and even those students who have not yet started the process could still achieve certification in time for graduation.

To get started, students can attend a “Getting Started with WoW” workshop at the GDC on 18th, 21st and 29th May and 1st, 10th, 15th and 26th June. To book a place on a “Getting Started with WoW” workshop, click here

Or students can complete the online interview in their own time by going to http://vis.ljmu.ac.uk/ and then the GDC will contact them to guide them through the rest of the process.

    Government announces Graduate internship plans

The government has made a long-awaited announcement on its plans for graduate internships. The package of measures, which it hopes will help combat graduate unemployment, will include opportunities for both paid and unpaid work-experience in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Under the scheme, graduates already claiming Job Seekers' Allowance will be eligible to receive it for up to 13 weeks while on an unpaid placement.

Terry Dray, Director of the GDC commented ‘The GDC are monitoring developments closely and my advice to LJMU graduates is to stay in close contact with us in the coming months’

The Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills has published a brochure containing details of the scheme and set up a Graduate Talent Pool website via which employers can register their interest.
