Graduate Skills
Our Graduate Skills programme covers eight skills that have been recognised nationally as essential for graduates, whatever their degree subject. You can achieve these skills through your course and also use experiences gained elsewhere (home, work, hobbies etc).
The eight graduate skills are broken down into smaller criteria, and these criteria have been embedded into your course modules. They are now a part of all degree courses at LJMU, and as such you will automatically be taught these skill criteria, have an opportunity to practice them, and then will be automatically assessed on them, receiving feedback on your development of the criteria from the assessment. You can see the criteria for each skill by clicking on the main skill headings on the left hand menu.
The module handbooks that you receive each semester throughout your degree will list what Graduate Skills are in each of your modules. Once you have successfully demonstrated each criteria, and proven that you can reflect on and articulate that skill, LJMU will officially confirm that you are competent in this skill area. As such, you will receive a certificate when you finish your degree that lists all the skill criteria that you successfully demonstrated during your course. There are currently a possible 41 criteria that you can gain throughout your time at LJMU.
In order so that you can take evidence of your skill development away to use in applying for jobs and interviews after finishing university, you can store all of your evidence in a portfolio. LJMU’s e-Portfolio, a tool specifically designed to aid you in your development features templates allowing you to easily store evidence to support your skill development and to reflect on your progress studying at LJMU.
