Students
What is WoW?
WoW stands for the “world of work” and it is an initiative which is unique to LJMU which aims to make graduates the most valued by employers.
The WoW Programme aims to ensure that every student is equipped with the skills they need to stand out from the crowd and successfully engage in the world of work, either because they possess skills which are highly valued by employers or because they are well equipped to set themselves up in their own business.
Listen to Graduate Development Centre (GDC) Director Terry Dray talk students through the World of Work Programme and address any questions about the GDC, careers, employability, work-related learning and the WoW Skills Certificate.
Isn’t that Careers Advice?
Isn’t that Careers Advice?
Yes, but that’s only part of it!
Of course the WoW Programme encompasses conventional careers advice and guidance:
- Our “Ready for Work” programme is a series of workshops on such careers essentials as Writing a Winning CV and Job Hunting, which run very regularly at the Graduate Development Centre (a state of the art training and development facility for students near to Tithebarn Street and Byrom Street).
- You may also come across our Careers Advisors delivering certain elements of one of the modules on your degree programme.
- And you may have spotted our Employability Advisors who run appointments in the Campus Centres. They can give you access to lots of careers information and offer introductory advice.
- They can also arrange for you to have an in depth, one-to-one careers guidance session with one of our Faculty-specialised Careers Advisors.
But the WoW programme is so much more than just this!
So what makes WoW special / different?
For all our students to be able to graduate with the WoW factor, LJMU has put in place three more pieces of the jigsaw:
- Key transferrable skills, known as Graduate Skills, have been developed as part of every undergraduate degree programme.
- Work Related Learning - Every degree programme has an element of work-related learning, so that every student has the opportunity to engage in real world projects or go on placements and apply their skills in the context of the world of work.
- WoW Skills Certificate - All students will be able to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and how they want to make the transition into the world of work through LJMU’s unique WoW programme, which can culminate in employer-validated WoW skills certification.
So what do I need to do?
ACT NOW! Many elements are happening automatically, as they are already embedded in your degree programme. But be proactive and check out the Ready for Work sessions coming up this month. Sign up to do the WoW Skills Certificate or pop in and see an Employability Advisor, to get you started on your way to the world of work and the WoW factor!
